The Beta Airplane group is an introductory project designed to allow new or current member of the club to both learn how to fly a remote-controlled plane and construct one of their own. Students will be given the opportunity to learn on a simulator and fly an RC kit plane before delving into aircraft design for both basic gliders and remote-control aircraft. This includes, but is not limited to:
- The design of the wing’s airfoil(s)
- Design of internal wing support structures
- Construction of the fuselage & related structural components
- Control surfaces
- Design of the electrical systems on a RC plane.
When it comes to aircraft design, we aim for students to be able to start with the fundamentals of aircraft design during the spring semester. They can start with designing or repairing wings for previous aircraft, or, if they desire, designing and fabricating their own RC planes! If any of those sound intimidating, don’t worry! The aim of the Beta Planes group is to start at the basics and work your way up to the more complex topics.
